CAMEL SAFARI TRIPS!

Latif is the first company in Turkmenistan to offer camel safari trips to the Kara-Kum desert. We offer 4 journeys, from 3 to 10 days. You will get to see the beauty of the desert and discover the traditions and lifestyle of nomadic

Turkmen. For shorter trips, we suggest the following iteneraries:

  • Erbent-Bahardok (60km/36m, 2-3 days)
  • Tamly-Erbent-Bahardok (105km/65m, 3-4 days)
  • Darvaza-Tamly-Erbent-Bahardok (165km/102m, 5-6 days)
  • Erbent is 160km/100m north of Ashgabat, on the way to Tashauz
  • Tamly is 205km/127m north of Ashgabat, on the way to Tashauz
  • Darvaza is 260km/161m north of Ashgabat, on the way to Tashauz
  • Bahardok is 100km/62m north of Ashgabat, on the way to Tashauz where the real desert begins, with its constantly shifting sand dunes.

Along the way, one can see the desert plants (saksauls, kandyms, cherkez) on which camels have fed for centuries. The area is inhabited by nomadic shepherds breeding camels, living in yurts (nomadic tents) and getting water only from natural springs. There are no historical monuments here, but tourists can enjoy the stunning vistas of the Kara-Kum and get the chance to acquaint themselves with the culture and lifestyle of the Turkmen people. All this while riding along old camel trails which ancient trade caravans used for delivery of silk from China to Europe.

We rent tamed camels from private owners. Camels can cover 25-30km/15-18m a day in the desert. Tourists stay overnight in yurts–you must bring sleeping bags (unavailable in Ashgabat), provisions, water and any personal medical supplies. Tourists will be tranferred there by and air-conditioned coach at a fixed time.

Repetek-Zahmet-Mary (130km/80m)

In addition, we offer a fourth itenerary of 9 days which includes a three-day camel trip, taking you from Repetek-Zahmet-Mary over a distance of 130km/80m.

Repetek is located 75km/47m south of Chardzhou. It is known for the National Biospheric Desert Reserve Research Station, founded in 1912 and engaged in research of the Eastern Kara-Kum desert fauna and ecology. The transfer to Chardzhou-Repeteck is by coach. The route from Repeteck to Zahmet is very interesting. From Zahmet to Mary, tourists can ride on camelback (40km/25m). Tourists can also go out in a boat along the Kara-Kum Channel. In Mary, tourists survey the Merv monuments and are then transferred to Ashgabat by plane. The best season for the trip is autumn (September-November). This trip is for groups of at least 5 and at the most 15 people.
